Story: Based on the popular video game Dead Rising where a group of people have to survive a zombie out break & stay alive long enough to escape the on coming firestorm bombing of the city. One problem stand in there way I group of gang warriors & horded of flesh eating zombie.
Likes : I've always wonder weather this game will get an adaptation in film & here it is, in all its cheesy glory, Sony's Crackle, all streaming online, on-demand in conjunction with Legendary pictures offer an adaptation of Dead Rising Capcom's best selling video game but I will admit not as bad as I though it would be but could of been so better than what is offend here. The story is pretty basic & easy to follow other then a few plot hole & flaws it not a great film, but an ok film that slightly fun & funny to watch.
Some of the acting is questionable at time but it not a film you can take seriously with its cheesy one liners & acting in places, but this film dose offer the usual horror moment's with a axe wielding zombie clown which will scare though that fear clowns to a few zombie moments. No film like this is with the extra enemy in the form of a motor cycle gang which has been feature in the original game but they were escaped convicts I believe.
Rob Riggle playing the character of Frank West which was the character from the first game, not really the choice of actor I would of pick for the role since the character in the game is pretty serious , but I'm guessing they didn't want to take this film to seriously so Rob was a good choice in keep it with the light humour.
Keegan Connor Tracy done pretty well as the camera reporter, her acting was pretty much spot on & believable, I believe this is her 4th horror film since final destination 2 as she been in a lot of TV movies, she didn't do to bad in this film. Meghan Ory is looking pretty gorgeous in this film playing the tough girl act, her acting is spot on as well, for cheesy film, along with co-star Jesse Metcalfe (star of john tucker must die) playing the reporter hero type of the of the film, which is not bad acting but they could of made him a little more tougher though it felt like his character was held back a bit.
The somewhat action scene are well done, although I think this film could have done with a lot more, story script is ok as well I think this the way it is could have been better a series, more than a film but it not to bad. It's main issue by default and through no fault of its it own nor Lipovsky's or writer/producer Tim Carter it's all been done before. The game also apparently had a liable suit brought against it in 2008 for its similarities to Dawn of the Dead '78 and 2004. Nevertheless, if Dead Rising had been released in 2006 the same year of the game release it may have faired a little better as while it is a good production, just feels like it's covering old ground, zombies in general are not as fresh as they used to be its a very over used genre.
The movie dose have some throw back in game moments where you see the weapon being made like you do in the game & their is a scene where you see the main character put a traffic cone on one of the zombie heads & you see the famous Lego head helmet which bring back memory of the game but that about all really that .
Dislikes : The one plot hole in the film is there is no explanation of where the virus came from or why there was a virus out break in the first place, the story seem to follow the 2 second game other than the first game leaving unanswered of what happen in the first place if you have never played the game.
I feel as if this film should have been based on the first game rather than the second game really. The one problem is the cut scene when it jumps from the news room back to the story then back to the news room which slow down & impedes in the flow of the film.
The other thing as well that make this a weak story that doesn't make this the best adaptation to the game, as in the game there are over 2000 to 3000 zombies on screen at a time, in the film there is hardly any around when there is its very few it leave the film unfrightening & less intense, it feels that their lives aren't really that in danger which soils the film concept, like I said you cant really take this film seriously has it cheesiness & one-liners make this more a comedy spoof in places than a seriously zombie film. I feel This film could have been given a better story concept with a better budget, more zombie & cut out the cheesiness this could have been a spot on adaptation of the game but this is not a film you can take seriously as it a little short & lacking action.
Overall : Not a great film but a bad film its watchable although it could of been done better ,its not as bad as the trailer comes across but don't expect this to be a serious film.
Rating: 3.7 out of 5 for entertainment / 6.1 out of 10 for story adaptation from the game
