Parents advised to read before viewing film as some scene may contain scenes unsuitable for younger viewers.
Sex & Nudity: Some sexualised nudity, and some scenes of sex A few scenes show breasts. About 26 minutes into the movie, Dom strips and runs away from Mr. Fontaine's Villa. Dickie chases after him and we see a few shots of Dom's butt and a few shots of his penis from a far(it's a wide shot, but if you're paying attention, you'll see it wiggling around).
Violence & Gore: A scene where a man is beat up is quite graphic, a violent car crash after which dead bodies are shown, along with one character who's been speared by an auto bumper.
Profanity: Very strong language throughout. About a 100 uses of the word fuck, 10 uses of Cunt (though almost always directed at men, as is common in England), one use of middle finger, many uses of other profanities like shit, bitch etc.
Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking:Some hard drug use Cocaine shown being taken, alcohol use
Frightening/Intense Scenes: car crash in the middle of the film is quite intense
Story: After spending 12 years in prison for keeping his mouth shut, notorious safe-cracker Dom Hemingway is back on the streets of London looking to collect what he's owed.
Likes : A watered down Bronson, a film of similar premise, Dom Hemingway is delightfully dark, similar to his psyche – he is disgusting, filthy, violent and loud, but he retains an lot of charm, one of the few things dragging the film along. Bearing numerous similarities to Refn's prisoner character study, Dom Hemingway is truly a visual feast : the pumping nightlife of downtown London is full of colour.
The screen is constantly full of greens and yellows, reds and pinks – it isn't dull to look at. While it isn't as intrusive and cerebral as Refn's terrifying glimpse into the mind of a madman, Dom Hemingway and Bronson share two familiar traits: a strong cockney accent and a loud mouth which surprisingly Jude law pulls off very well.
While they may retain similarities, they are largely superficial they are different film's, but it fluently highlights Don Hemingway's numerous flaws. Dom's charisma simply doesn't compare to that of Bronson's, from the way he carries himself to the way he walks through the streets and alleys.
While the loud and ostentatious Bronson was an addict to attention, Dom slinks into the shadows the way he slinks into a chair; sleazy and slouched.
When opportune, he indulges in delightful monologue, Shakespearean in his formidable vocabulary, but it all tastes a slight bit overdone. The script, like Hemingway himself, is largely self-indulgent and masturbatory, and is surely tiresome.
Jude Law performs excellently, as does the majority of the cast, yet Hemingway's left-hand-less right-hand man Dickie (Richard E. Grant, The Corpse Bride) completely steals the show, injecting wit and energy into every scene, contrasting Hemingway's rambunctious bluntness. Unfortunately, it isn't enough to elevate Dom Hemingway's paradoxically under cooked-while-overcooked dialogue. With an over-emphasis on Hemingway's verbose monologue and an under-emphasis on every else, Dom Hemingway is a superficial, attractive, generally fun film with little depth.
You can certainly tell that this is a British film with the London cockney ascent & mostly London out look with a pretty violent & adult theme with the language being so strong at time it does get a bit over the top, so this film really is a film you ive like or hate.
Dislikes : The story- line is a little flaw in places & the language can be over the top could of done with toning down a little.
Overall : Gangster style British film with alot of swearing & good acting , a film not everyone is going to like..
Rating: 4.2 out of 5 for entertainment / 6.2 out of 10 for story-line.
